Job Search Advice
It's not all about money
Physicians sometimes make the mistake of considering compensation as the first and most important criteria when deciding upon a practice opportunity. Often, they later learn that money was not the most important issue they should have considered when comparing practices.
Instead, we recommend you also carefully consider if the position will provide you the ability to further your professional development, and how the position will provide you not only job satisfaction but life enjoyment for you and your family. As you consider these important issues, you will then be more apt to choose the right practice and community.
Define your criteria
Before even starting your search for a practice, consult with your family and define the most important criteria in considering practice opportunities and geographic location.
Be sure to make a written list of the criteria so that you can objectively compare each practice situation to your list.
Include criteria such as:
- Reputation of the hospital, university or group you will join
- Type of work you will perform
- Leadership or other opportunities
- Available resources, including necessary equipment
- Competition for your specialty
- Availability of other specialists to which you can refer patients
- Support provided by hospital or entity you will join
- Community resources for your family
- Availability of career opportunities for your spouse
- Quality schools for your children
- Fine arts, recreational, higher educational opportunities
- Proximity to family and friends
- Salary, benefits, and other financial considerations
